No SLR, No Problem

Here are some pictures I took while down in the French countryside, using my unassuming Blackberry phone camera.

As a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera user, I often find myself surprised at what one can still do with a phone camera. I have even seen brilliant short films shot with such devices. What is great about these tools is that, with their limited specs, you are challenged to be creative and resourceful, teaching you to take advantage of what is out there (natural lighting for instance). These pictures also remind me of one I took a few years ago using my Motorola Razr phone. After all these years, a photograph taken with a mere 2-megapixel camera remains one of the works I am most proud of.

I wonder what Nikon has to say about this in light of their recent social media faux pas?

While I do not claim to be a great photographer, I take offense at any declaration that one can only be considered good because of his camera. While I agree that a good tool is essential, you usually do not congratulate a surgical knife for a successful medical operation.

Hi Clarence, ate rich here…
A few months ago, I bought my first ever cam dslr pa. Pero sometimes when I’m taking pictures with it I kinda missed our 4 megapix point and shoot cam. Kasi feeling ko kung ano ang nagagawa ko sa SLR keri din naman sa P&S. And then I’m reading basic photography and editing. It turns out photos from P&S can have excellent results too when edited. hay ewan maybe di lang talaga ako masyadong marunong sa SLR hahahaha…Kulang sa practice…
Pero you have a point, kapag may magandang photo laging unang tanong “anong camera mo?” Hellow!!! its not about the cam. Nasa tao kung pano niya gamitin at pag apply ng technique. Nasa photographer pa din ang ikinagaganda ng isang litrato…
Hello Ate Rich, I agree, minsan nakakainsulto. ;)
As for your SLR, just take it out for photo walks more often and experiment with the manual settings. :)
I agree. You can get some kickass shots with a phone camera. However, it’s not good when I want to do something advanced like a long-exposure shot or a macro shot, and this makes me miss my SLR…I have one, but it’s film, and I stopped because it’s too expensive to shoot with it.
Yes, there are limitations of course. I love timelapses and long exposures, which you often can only do well with a better camera, like an SLR. My first SLR was also film, a second hand Canon EOS 650. Loved it a lot, and it taught me a lot of things but it became too troublesome and costly to have the film rolls developed/scanned.
